"I am Elizabeth Tudor and I will bow to no man. I will face ever threat to my reign with sword in hand. And any
who shall stand in my way shall fall.
"
Queen Elizabeth

Elizabeth Tudor is the Queen of England and Ireland. She is the daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn. She is Mary of Scotland's first cousin once removed, and are only a couple of years apart. Elizabeth's father was the younger brother of Mary Stuart's grandmother, Margaret Tudor. After the death of her sister Mary, Elizabeth became sole ruler, and Queen of England at the age of 25.

Must See Episodes

Personality

Elizabeth is proud and headstrong above all. Although not taking any advice isn't always good, she is aware of the importance of trusting her own judgement. At times, she is manipulative and vindictive, especially when she feels threatened. Despite being a capable ruler, Elizabeth doesn't always act in her realm's best interest, especially when in love. For instance, she told Gideon Blackburn he was "more precious to me than my nation".

As the series goes on, Elizabeth becomes increasingly savvy and shrewd, managing to subdue even the most restive of her nobility. Although she is fearful at heart, Elizabeth hides it well and is capable of feigning courage in order to rally people to her side. She has been let down and betrayed more than once, but she continues to open her heart and soul to people she feels are worthy of it.

King Henry II stated a new condition of Scotland and France's marriage alliance is that Mary Stuart delivered England to France. Support from The Vatican made him think he could get it, However, Queen Catherine cautioned Princess Elizabeth would have support too. Armies she'd been gathering for years. Laying claim to England could cost Mary Stuart her head, as it did Lady Jane Grey.

When the English Queen dies, so would Henry the VIII's legitimate line, as Mary Stuart is his next relation by blood, because Elizabeth is King Henry VIII's daughter by Anne Boleyn and her parents' marriage was never recognized by The Catholic Church, because in God's eyes, she doesn't even exist. Elizabeth is Protestant and The Pope doesn't want to lose a nation to Protestantism. However, a Scottish Queen on the English throne, a daughter born of one of Henry's wives, dismissed would cause uprisings and wars.

King Henry insisted if Mary Stuart wanted to take England, should need the next king of France by her side, and demanded she would wed one of his sons that night.

After Mary and Francis' Wedding it was discovered that Mary Tudor had not passed away, and was still alive ruling England. The whole think was a play her Mary's mother, Marie de Guise.

Season 3

Three Queens, Two Tigers
Queen Elizabeth hears from her advisors that the war she wants with Mary and France is going to be expensive. Queen Catherine has been brought in to Elizabeth's private counsel and she uses her position to usurp Mary. Catherine has called in nobles from French court and plans to use them to help Elizabeth reveal Mary's affair with Louis of Condé to the Pope to disempower her.

Elizabeth is in love with a married man, Lord Dudley. He asks to be set free from her court, but she refuses. Catherine knows of Elizabeth's fondness for Lord Dudley, but Elizabeth asserts her virginity. Catherine believes it's time for Elizabeth to get married, and offers up Prince Charles as a candidate. First, Elizabeth will have to reach out to King Francis for his blessing.

Elizabeth is once again advised to marry after Catherine is kidnapped by English Catholics loyal to France. Instead of being rational, Elizabeth turns to Robert Dudley.

Betrothed
At a meeting, the privy council reveals the depth of Elizabeth's mistake in harboring Queen Catherine. Catholic kings are threatening to turn against her and there is a need for an English ambassador in France. A member of her council suggests Lord Robert Dudley, Elizabeth's lover, at his wife's behest.

Queen Elizabeth handles the issue of Catherine's asylum in England by paying off a Lady Donatella at court. She plans to keep Lord Dudley by her side by offering him an even better position than the one he would have if he were ambassador to France. When she shares her plan with her most trusted officials, she learns that the lords are plotting against her and know of her affair.

Elizabeth's plot to use the Lady Donatella to cover for Catherine's asylum results in the banishment of both Lord and Lady Barlow from court, as well as having their lands and finances taken from them. Elizabeth refuses to send Dudley as an ambassador to France and embarrasses Robert Dudley in the eyes of her council. Elizabeth appoints Nicholas the new English ambassador to France instead.

The Price
Prince Don Carlos of Spain visits Queen Elizabeth to seek her hand in marriage. William Cecil warns her that Mary will align herself with Spain after Francis dies in order to save her country. Either Elizabeth makes the alliance or Mary will. Don Carlos is charming and Elizabeth invites him to extend his stay at court.

Robert Dudley confronts Elizabeth about her consideration of Don Carlos' marriage proposal. He begs her not to marry the Spanish prince and tells her that the secret to swaying the nobles is to make the English people fall in love with her, just as he has.

Mary has yet again outwitted Elizabeth by using a false cypher to send her forces the wrong direction and saving her besieged mother in the process. Elizabeth, feeling humiliated, agrees to accept Don Carlos' marriage proposal.

Don Carlos asks Elizabeth why she hasn't married and tells her that there's a rumor circulating around court that she's really a man masquerading as the Queen of England. Shamed, Elizabeth storms out and finds Robert Dudley in the hall. She blames his wife, Amy Dudley, for the story.

That night, Elizabeth vows to William to never marry.

Fight or Flight
Robert Dudley returns to Elizabeth to confront her about the job she gave his wife. Elizabeth vows never to marry if she can't have Dudley and they end up sleeping together. Again. He returns to his chambers to find Amy Dudley there alone. He suggests they do not discuss Elizabeth.

A doctor diagnoses Amy with melancholia and blames it on the fact that she and her husband do not have sex. She seduces the doctor so that he'll diagnose Amy with a mass instead so that Dudley's affections will return to her. His course of treatment involves a sojourn in Cornwall with a physician there, which will take Dudley away from Elizabeth.

Dudley breaks the news to Elizabeth that he must go to Cornwall with his wife, which means their dalliance must end. Elizabeth believes Amy's illness is fate's way of telling them they can be together, but Amy has to die first.

Queen Elizabeth bought up how Gideon Blackburn used her, made her care for him. But he couldn't make her fall in love with him, because she were in love with Robert Dudley. Which he reported back to her half-sister, Mary Tudor. Gideon was Mary Tudor's eyes and ears, sent to inform on Elizabeth, the greatest threat to her crown. So she ripped Robert from his cell and Elizabeth's side.

The Hound and the Hare
Elizabeth wants Gideon Blackburn to stop Mary's marriage to Prince Don Carlos of Spain.

Wedlock
Queen Elizabeth visits a village and walks among her people, hoping to earn their love. William is pleased that Elizabeth has turned her attention back to ruling now that Dudley is away from court. He also informs Elizabeth that Lola will be joining her at court. Elizabeth gets sick once she's safely inside her carriage.

Elizabeth tells Dudley that she's pregnant with his child, and they both agree she cannot keep the child unless they are married. Dudley can't get divorced, and even if they were married, their child would be considered illegitimate. His only solution is that she marry another. When she disagrees, he promises to divorce his wife and marry her, even if that would mean the end of her reign. William believes her idea is a bad one, but she begs him for his support.

Elizabeth and Robert discuss his wife, Amy, and what they might do about her. They agree to lock her away in an insane asylum, which would make her unable to expose Elizabeth's pregnancy and give Robert grounds for a divorce. However, Amy breaks out of her room and jumps from the upper balcony before either of them have a chance to enact their plan.

William apprises Elizabeth of Amy's death. Since Robert had dismisses the servants and was the last person seen with Amy, it appears as though he killed her. Later that night, Elizabeth and Dudley meet to discuss Amy's death and how they can move forward after it. They realise that Amy has killed herself so that they will pay the price.

Bruises That Lie
Elizabeth smears blood on her bed sheet. When a servant comes in, she assumes that it is Elizabeth's and that she is on her period. When Lola meets with Elizabeth in order to discuss the release of her father and brothers, she is dismissed from Elizabeth's presence after doubting Elizabeth's word.

Elizabeth and Robert discuss the fact that he is scheduled to go before a tribunal for the death of his wife. There is almost no chance they can ever be together and the longer it takes for suitors to return her letters, the greater the risk she will be caught.

William Cecil comes to Elizabeth and tells her that none of the suitors she wrote to have accepted her proposal. While her servant's back is turned, someone poisons her tea.

Lola meets with Elizabeth once again. After hearing about the joy John has brought to Lola's life, Elizabeth finds herself in pain. She leaves their meeting in a rush.

That night, Dudley finds Elizabeth in her chambers. She has had a miscarriage and had to clean it up herself so that no one would see or find out. He is free, but they aren't free to be together.

Succession
Gideon Blackburn warned Mary Stuart that Queen Elizabeth would see her raising a Catholic army as an act of aggression. Even if it was to stop John Knox. As The Vatican has been determined to reclaim England ever since she turned the country Protestant after Mary Tudor her Catholic sister died.

Spiders in a Jar
Robert Dudley tells Elizabeth how sorry he is over Lola's beheading. knowing she'd grown very fond of her. Elizabeth says she let her get close because she was lonely. But now she doesn't want to be, and since the nation's sympathies will be with her, she would like to marry him at last. However, Robert reveals that he has re-married, Lettice Knollys.

Season 4

With Friends Like These
Elizabeth is having tea with Lady Lennox, Lord Darnley's mother. Elizabeth is not pleased that Lady Lennox has not brought Darnley with her. While Lady Lennox tries to play dumb, Elizabeth knows she has been corresponding with Queen Mary about arranging a marriage between her and her son.

"Tell your son to come to court. Or I will have him dragged here. On his knees."
Queen Elizabeth

Elizabeth is consulting her advisors after the attempt on her life when Gideon Blackburn comes in. Elizabeth charges Gideon with finding Darnley and bringing him to her.

Elizabeth has been apprised of John Knox's role in her assassination attempt by Gideon, but she can't go after him without the evidence that died along with Reneé. And even if Mary were innocent, Elizabeth knows that she is trying to take her throne. As Elizabeth blathers on about how she and Mary are pawns in a game that is larger than either of them and about how it is so simple in reality, Gideon shows her how simple being on a path of war with Mary really is.

Elizabeth informs Lord Narcisse that Lola's son is safe, and he's at the castle, being tended to. Narcisse tells her John Knox was responsible. Lola thought she was following Mary's orders, but she was following his.

Lady Keira and Lord Darnley want to get married. However, Lady Keira is promised to Lord White by her family. When Lord Darnley is summoned to English Court by Elizabeth, she brokers a deal with him.

A Grain of Deception
Elizabeth and Lord Narcisse are playing an Italian game called Bocce. Narcisse doesn't understand why he's still being held at English court, but Elizabeth reminds him that he stabbed two of her guards. She also tells him that she wrote to Catherine de' Medici about the terms of Narcisse's release but Catherine hasn't responded.

A Grain Of Deception 11

Gideon comes in and apprises Elizabeth of Lord White agreeing to release Keira from their engagement under the condition of receiving a substantial sum for it. He also tells her that John Knox has arrived at court, and much to Gideon's surprise, Elizabeth invited him. She wants to bring him down.

Elizabeth and Knox meet. Elizabeth brings up the attack on her life and the person she is supposed to believe is responsible for it, Queen Mary. Elizabeth would like to join forces against her and Knox is intrigued by the prospect.

Narcisse is summoned by Queen Elizabeth. She has a plan to destroy Knox but she needs his help. She doesn't have proof of his crime against her so she needs him to plan another, during which she will catch him red-handed and try him. In exchange for entrapping him, Narcisse will earn his freedom back and get to kill Knox.

A Grain Of Deception 74

Knox is nowhere to be seen!

Knox takes the bait but doesn't arrive at the French Embassy like Narcisse hoped he would, likely because he sensed a trap. However, Gideon finds out that fifty of Elizabeth's subjects gathered there. When Elizabeth learns of it, she orders them all quietly killed.

Knox is intercepted before reaching the border and brought in front of Elizabeth. She confronts him about his attempt on her life and he admits to it, but can tell that Elizabeth has no proof, otherwise he'd be in the tower. Elizabeth knows that if Knox goes missing, she will have an uprising on her hands, so she lets him go. She also allows Narcisse to go home.

Leaps of Faith
Elizabeth and Gideon brought up Mary Stuart, and Gideon Blackburn asked to marry Mary, with Elizabeth's blessing. Gideon insisted Mary was not like her, or even Catherine. She never angled to be Queen, and was crowned at six days old, and it had cost her everything. Her husband, King Francis, whom she adored, and her best friend, Lola. She only wanted is to be happy and have a family, now power.

Hanging Swords
Gideon Blackburn asked Elizabeth is what she told his daughter, Agatha Blackburn about heaven came so easily to her was because it's what she told yourself as a child. Elizabeth confirmed her father, King Henry VIII wanted little to do with her, and her mother, Anne Boleyn was killed before she turned three. Later her sister, Mary Tudor locked her in The Tower of London and accused her of treason, and she never knew if they were coming for her next. So she told herself that story so she wouldn't be afraid.

Dead of Night
The Archduke of Austria met with Elizabeth for a private sit down. He expressed his desire for a real relationship if they both agreed to wed. Elizabeth agreed and reminded him not to go public with their possible engagement until all the details were worked out between their two countries. The next day they met in the gardens where he invited her for a scenic carriage ride that night.

The Shakedown
The Archduke and Queen Elizabeth's engagement would be officially announced in a few weeks.

Elizabeth and Gideon were discovered kissing by Jane. Elizabeth yelled she cannot risk her reputation. She was the "Virgin Queen" and her marriage to Archduke Ferdinand would be her best protection against her enemies, all would be undone if Jane lived to speak. Gideon Blackburn tried to persuade her, because they spent a moment together, an innocent girl, a loyal servant, had to die. Elizabeth asked what were innocence and loyalty, Lola was both, and she conspired to have her killed. Lola actively betrayed her, but still Lola's death haunted her. Not long after, Gideon agreed to take Jane to the woods and when he returned, they'd return to court. But he added, when it's done, she would not feel safer, and after Lola died, she only felt more alone.

Later Elizabeth confided Lola's death still haunted her When she was brought to execution, she had a look in her eyes she will never forget, and Jane had that same look. She that is why she let her live.

Coup de Grace
Elizabeth and the Archduke of Austria consummated their relationship and are officially engaged. He also reveals he is the nephew to King Philip of Spain.

A Bride. A Box. A Body.
Elizabeth and The Archduke are talking about Gideon Blackburn. Elizabeth says he is a long-term confidante, a skilled advisor and diplomat, whose journeys, for the Crown, have met with spectacular success. The Archduke insists he is in-love him her. Elizabeth agreed he might be as many are. She is the queen of England and represents something glorious, for everyone. And if he wants to banish every person who is dazzled by her, they'd be a nation of mainly women.

Elizabeth professes her love to Gideon Blackburn in a secret church nuptials. She vows to him, but to God. And woven into this fabric from her mother's dress are her dreams of lasting love for Elizabeth. She tells him the joy she would have felt knowing she'd met Gideon.

Blood in the Water
Jane heads to Elizabeth's room, where the queen has been grieving for the past month. Elizabeth suspects the Archduke of poisoning Gideon and in retribution, she plans on stealing a ship that carries all of his family's gold.

Soon enough, Elizabeth summons Jane to her office. A number of occurrences have mounted to arouse suspicion around Jane and her family, but Jane is let off the hook when the Naval Commander Francis Drake is there to see Elizabeth. Elizabeth tells Drake about a Portuguese ship filled with precious cargo she wants him to seize for England. However, the operation cannot be traced back to her in any way. In return, he will be compensated 10% of the haul.

The following day, Francis Drake returns with the haul, but there is bad news - while cutting through Spanish waters on their way back, they ran afoul of Spanish warships. They started firing at each other and Drake ended up sinking two warships - while the English sails were raised. Elizabeth freaks out: King Philip has always desired England, and now he has grounds for war.

Her meeting with Drake makes Elizabeth think, and she slowly catches up to Jane's lie - she reveals she had Jane followed home last night, and found out that Jane's family has yet to return and that her livestock remains untended to. Jane, shaking out of fear, attempts to contrive another lie, but Elizabeth doesn't believe her and has her taken to Tower.

All It Cost Her
The Archduke of Austria presents Elizabeth a new marriage contract - one that is far more advantageous for him than it is for England - and Elizabeth isn't inclined to sign it. That is, until the Archduke vows to use his connection to the Spanish ambassador to spare her a war with Spain.

Elizabeth confronts Jane about the French goods given to her by Narcisse as payment for killing Gideon Blackburn. Jane reveals that she hates royals because of what Henry VIII did to her grandfather. Elizabeth tells her that neither she nor Gideon ever hurt her, but when Jane mouths off again, Elizabeth hits her in the head with a golf stick.

Elizabeth goes over the plan to go to war with Spain with Francis Drake, her new military commander. Even if they do defeat the Spanish Armada, their military will be depleted at every level after that, which will allow Scotland to invade.

Later that night, Elizabeth receives Mary's letter, where she reads that Mary abdicates her claim to the English throne. Upon learning that her cousin is no longer a threat, Elizabeth calls off the marriage with the Archduke, as it is no longer of strategic importance to England. Soon enough, Elizabeth is rallying her army to fight.

Twenty-one years later, Mary's son James is begging Elizabeth to spare Mary. She doesn't relent, but she does give him a choice: he can either be named Elizabeth's heir and unite both England and Scotland under his rule, or he can save his mother, but she will be held captive until the rest of her life.

"Because I cannot have her blood on my hands. And I cannot let her go."
