Lady Lola

History[]

Early History[]

Lola was hand picked by Marie de Guise to be a playmate, and when older, a Lady-in-waiting to Queen Mary when they were both little girls. From there, their relationship grew and developed.

Season 1[]

Mary and Lola are reunited and their friendship almost immediately tested right after. When Lola sees Colin offering Mary a drink at Elisabeth and Philip's Wedding, she becomes jealous, but Mary tries to shake off Lola's skepticism by dancing with her and her other ladies. [1]

It becomes even more complicated when, after they found out that Colin tried to rape Mary in her sleep and was beheaded for it. Lola questions her own as well as the safety of the other ladies-in-waiting, and though Mary insists that they are all her friends and she will protect them, none of them seem convinced. [1]

Despite grieving her boyfriend's death, Lola continues being a loyal friend to Mary. She gives her council about Sebastian, [2] Francis, [3], and even blackmails Queen Catherine into leaving her and Bash alone. [4]

Lola sleeps with Francis, betraying Mary.

It's revealed that Lola is pregnant with Francis' child. As Mary and Kenna go to visit Lola in her quarters they find that she has already left and that is when Mary finds out. Mary rushes to stop Lola from having an abortion that could have killed her to discover that it's Francis' child. She is deeply hurt by the news and no longer trusts Lola.

Mary tries to help Lola find a suitor. They get in a fight after Mary lies to Francis whether she knew or didn't know about the affair he had with Lola. Then Mary forces Lola to marry Phillipe Nadine, who was revealed to prefer men in bed. At the end of the episode, the two eventually come to terms and Mary says she'll let Lola choose whoever she wants to marry.

Season 2[]

Soon after the plague has run its course, Francis returns to the castle with Lola and his newborn son in tow, causing tension with Mary. [5]

The tension continues well into the christening of Lola and Francis' son, and even the news of Mary's pregnancy doesn't do much to relieve it. In an attempt to free her friend from the shackles of an arranged marriage to a wealthy nobleman, Lola goes to Francis and Mary, but they tell her that they cannot intercede until there is proof that the nobleman is abusive to his fiancée. [6]

Lola complains how her friend has no choice, to the point that it parallels Lola's situation with being deemed the king's mistress despite not wanting it. Once Francis leaves, Lola and Mary tear into each other about Lola sleeping with Francis. But Mary, being queen, has more choice and authority in the situation. [6]

The friendship seems irreparable, but they soften to one another after Mary teams up with Lola to help Estelle escape from Lord Narcisse. Mary forgives Lola and asks her to stop feeling guilty. The two reconcile and Lola asks Mary to be the godmother of her son, John Philip, which Mary accepts. [6]

Their friendship continues to strengthen for the rest of the season, with events such as when Lola supports Mary after she was raped, [7] Lola courting Condé per her queen's request [8], and Lola acting like a mediator between Francis and Mary and comforting Mary when she was in despair. [9]

Season 3[]

Greer tells Mary Stuart that the Spanish alliance from her marriage to Don Carlos would empower her and their nation against Elizabeth, and having the backing of Spain would allow her to bring Lola and her family home.

Mary Stuart recounts the first time she came to court. Stepping out of the carriage, everyone lined up to welcome her. She was so nervous, but at least she had her friends, Kenna, Aylee, Greer, Lola with her.

Lola was sentenced to death after being found guilty of conspiring to assassinate Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth of England. Thinking that it was an order from Mary Stuart, but it was John Knox. When Mary learned that Lola was executed, Mary was heartbroken, so much so that she vowed to take revenge on Elizabeth for killing her friend.

Season 4[]

Mary attends Lola's funeral.

Quotes[]

Lady Lola: You are my queen and we're your subjects. We're here in service to you. Whatever that means, whatever it costs us. [1]

Queen Mary: If the truth comes out and he loses faith in me for it, I will resent you! [10]

Queen Mary: In the end, it is you who must save yourself. You mustn't let anyone stand in your way. [10]

Queen Mary: I am more than your friend. I am your queen. [6]

Lady Lola: We don't care about the Monarchy, we're your friends, we care about you! [7]

Queen Mary: It may not be my throne by the time I get there. And that girl, who knew no fear... I'm not her anymore.
Lady Lola: No. You are wiser and stronger. Remember that strength that so many have tried to take from you. It is in you stil, my friend. My queen. [9]

(To Queen Elizabeth)
Lady Lola: There can only be one queen. And I had to choose mine. [11]

Notes[]

  • Several parallels exist between them:
    • Both were involved with Francis and Condé, although Lola's involvement with both of them was short-lived.
    • Both were involved with Bash; Lola was involved with him very briefly, but Mary and him had a longer romantic relationship. [12][13]
    • Both were impregnated by Francis although Mary miscarried while Lola carried her son to full term. [6][14]
    • Both were beheaded on the orders of Queen Elizabeth. [11][15]
  • Historically the two were half-first-cousins.
