For King and Country
"I love you. But I won't let other people die for me."
Queen Mary

Synopsis[]

Mary Learns that Someone Close to Her Will Die
Nostradamus tells Mary of his prophecy that one among them will die soon, which causes Mary to make a decision that will forever change her relationship with Francis. Clarissa (Katie Boland) becomes bolder with her endeavors, while Kenna informs Catherine of Diane's (Anna Walton) plan for Bash, which ends up backfiring.

Plot[]

Francis and Mary are making out in bed. Mary wonders if it's wrong what they're doing, consummating their relationship before having married, but Francis doesn't see it that way. A servant comes in and Mary hides under the covers. They are informed that Cardinal Tesson has arrived.

Fated - 3 Kenna n Henry

You're leaving me for Diane?

In the infirmary, a bruised up Kenna is in bed with Henry sitting next to her. Kenna is upset because Henry has not been by her side. Instead, he has been with Diane, as the servants divulged. At first, Henry claims that Diane is just his friend and counselor, but when Kenna asks for the truth yet again, he admits to still being unable to let Diane ago.

Sebastian pulls his mother to the side to discuss his legitimization. He asks her if the cardinal's visit to the castle has anything to do with her, and she informs him that such matters must be discussed in private. He reiterates that he does not want to become king, even if it meant that he could have Mary.

Fated - 6 Mary n Francis

Say what?

Mary and Francis walk down to The Throne Room with Mary's Ladies-in-Waiting. King Henry announces that the English Queen is dying and that Mary is next in line for the English Throne. Henry also adds that they shall be wed. This shocks and excites both Mary and Francis. Mary is concerned about the fact that laying claim to England is now a condition of their marriage.

Mary talks to Henry in private about his statement. She doesn't want to lay claim to England, but Henry pressures her to do it. He harbours a lot of hatred toward the English, and vicariously seeks vengeance through Mary.

"She will come after you, whether you reach for the crown or not."
King Henry

Diane informs her son that his legitimization is no longer possible. She apologizes for dangling Mary in front of him.

Fated - 10 Kenna

I know your secret now, Diane!

Meanwhile, in the hallway, Kenna has a run-in with a priest, who mistakes her for Diane. The priest admits that he is surprised that Diane looks so young. Kenna is confused at first, but doesn't correct him. Instead, she uses the misunderstanding to her advantage, mining for information. She finds out that Diane and the priest have been communicating about Sebastian's potential legitimization, but that the priest has come to tell her that they cannot continue, because the pope is in favor of Francis and Mary's upcoming nuptials. Kenna asks if Henry knows, but is informed that it was kept a secret, as per Diane's request.

Later on, Mary and Francis go for a walk. They talk about their surprise marriage. Mary admits that she wants him but is afraid of war with the English. Francis vows to support her until he dies. Francis then proposes to Mary, and she says yes.

Kenna apprises Queen Catherine of Diane's plans to have Bash legitimized behind everyone's back. Catherine says that she will think about how she can use this information to her benefit.

Later that day, Mary informs her ladies-in-waiting that she will marry Francis tomorrow night. The girls are excited and dream up Mary's wedding dress.

Just in case Mary doesn't believe you.

Catherine and Nostradamus discuss his prophecy. If Mary weds Francis, Nostradamus' prophecy will come to pass. Nostradamus passes Catherine a vial of poisoned. However, he strongly encourages her to only use it as her last resort. He advises her to tell Mary of his prophecy, and if she doesn't believe it, she may kill her.

Catherine calls in Mary and opens up about Nostradamus' prophecy. She begs Mary not to marry Francis, because he will die if she does. She also pleads with her not to tell Henry, as he would have both Catherine and Nostradamus killed for heresy.

Can I change my fate?

Mary goes to Nostradamus and asks him about the prediction. He warns Mary that he sees a girl, one among them, dead in a day's time. Kenna steps into the room and questions what he means by 'one among them'. Nostradamus continues, saying that he sees Mary's ladies gathered around a dead girl, he does not know who. Kenna looks to Mary, clearly frightened by this news. Mary approaches Nostradamus and asks him if this fate can be changed, but is told that it cannot.

Mary and her ladies-in-waiting then discuss the latest setback. The girls question the credibility of Nostradamus' words. Mary talks to Bash in hopes of deciphering Nostradamus' prophecy. Bash tells her that bastards choose their own symbols, because they don't belong to anyone. He chose the lion, while Tomás chose the dragon, and they fought in a field of poppies.

Fated - 27 Catherine

One mistress down, one to go.

Henry and Diane are making love in his chamber. Once they finish, Henry leaves to fetch her a snack. Taking advantage of Henry's absence, Catherine warns Diane that she will expose her for trying to have Bash legitimized if she does not immediately leave French court. However, before she goes, she asks her to poison Kenna for her.

Lola, Aylee and Greer sit on Kenna's bed in the infirmary. Kenna has a drink delivered to her, so she asks Aylee to pass her the cup, and when she lifts it, Aylee notes that it smells nice and mentions smelling a spice in it. Aylee then gives all the ladies a piece of jewelry for them to wear at Mary and Francis' Wedding. The girls then toast to the power of love and friendship.

Grieving Aylee's death.

On the eve of their wedding day, Mary lets Francis know that whatever happens, she loves him and he declares that he would die for her. They lean in for a kiss, when suddenly, they hear a scream. When they make their way downstairs, they find Aylee lying oh the floor in a pool of blood, with the ladies circled around her. Mary, overcome with grief, starts screaming at Nostradamus, calling him a devil.

Sebastian is pulled to the side by his mother, where she tells him that Catherine found out about Diane's plan to legitimise Bash, and is now using that knowledge to blackmail Diane into leaving court. She urges her son to temporarily flee court as well, and leaves on a reassuring note that she will talk to Henry and make him understand.

Fated - 45 Aylee

Look what you did!

In his chamber, Nostradamus has Aylee's body laid out in front of him. He inspects her hands, and recognizes an effect of one of his poisons. But he knows it wasn't Catherine's poison, so he leads the trail straight to Clarissa. As Nostradamus chastises her for what she has done, he removes the bag off of her head and makes her look Aylee in the face. He then tosses her in a dark room as punishment for what she has done.

Mary is packing to leave France and return to Scotland. She tells her ladies that she will find a new alliance, as this one has cost them enough already. Mary promises to send for them as soon as she can, and they will reunite in Scotland.

Mary announces to Catherine, Henry, and Francis that she is forfeiting the alliance with France and is not going to lay claim on England. Francis runs after her and asks her why she is walking out on their engagement. Mary claims that she doesn't believe that he can put her above his interests, but Francis doesn't believe her. Mary then recites his line that love is irrelevant to people like them.

"I love you. But I won't let other people die for me."

He calls out for Mary, but she ignores him and continues riding away. Francis is left devastated on his knees.

Quotes[]

Queen Mary: Elizabeth has support as well. Armies she's been gathering for years. You realize what laying claim to England can cost me?
Prince Francis: Yes, I do. It could cost you your head.

Queen Mary: Elizabeth is Henry VII's daughter.
King Henry: Yes, by Anne Boleyn. Her parents' marriage was never recognized by the Catholic Church. She's illegitimate, her claim is weak at best. In God's eyes she doesn't even exist!
Queen Catherine: How convenient God has this opinion. As Elizabeth happens to be Protestant.

Queen Catherine: A Scottish Queen on the English Throne. A daughter born of one of Henry's wives dismissed? There would be uprisings. Wars. Catholic against Protestant. Neighbour against neighbour.
Queen Mary: England against Scotland.
Prince Francis: And Elizabeth against Mary.

King Henry: She will come after you, whether you reach for the crown or not.

King Henry: Don't let fear keep you from greatness.

Queen Catherine: Why must I always be the one with blood on my hands?

Queen Catherine: Henry's fondness for anyone is eclipsed by his love of power.

Queen Mary: I love you. But I won't let other people die for me.
