"I don't mind getting the heel of my shoe bloody."
Hortenza de' Medici

Hortenza de' Medici was an Italian noblewoman and cousin of Catherine de' Medici. She came to court to reclaim the team of men she loaned Catherine, as she needed them for a job in Florence.

Personality[]

Hortenza de' Medici was not a very nice woman, though she was very lovely and intelligent, she used her wit to make others around her feel less about themselves or bully them. She appeared to have constantly reminded her cousin Catherine over the years about her and King Henry's relationship, even hinting at the fact that it still continued to go on. Not long into meeting Mary Stuart was she already belittling her.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Hortenza seemed to have an affection for King Henry, and it appears as though it was reciprocated. It is unknown if they ever acted on their feelings, only that Henry's were stronger for Catherine, as she was the one he ended up marrying.

Higher Ground

Higher Ground -Cortenza de' Medici 6

Where is your husband?

Hortenza and Roman de' Medici were waiting together in The Throne Room when their cousin Catherine de' Medici walked in along with Queen Mary of Scotland. She had come to inform her cousin, she was going to be taking her guards back, she had lent them to Catherine years ago and was there to collect them. Catherine and Hortenza bantered back and forth, a clear dislike for each other began showing.

The next day Hortenza burst into the Scottish Queen's room and informs her that Catherine had been taken, and whoever it was left a note. Mary asked what to do and Hortenza declines to do anything. Claiming that the Medicis don't give into threats or blackmail.

Time to get a little bloody

After speaking to her guard, Hortenza is approached by Mary. Mary would like to inquire the guard about his involvement in the whorehouse massacre. [1] Since the guard is in service to Hortenza, she takes it as a sign that Mary suspects her of ordering the slaughter of her men. Hortenza proceeds to threaten Mary should she attempt to gauge her involvement in the incident or bear false witness to Henry.

Hortenza didn't live to put her threat into action, though. She was decapitated by John Priveaux and framed for orchestrating Catherine's abduction.

Notes[]

  • It is unknown if Roman de' Medici and Hortenza were cousins or brother-and-sister.
  • Hortenza de' Medici's death is 49th death of Season One of Reign. [2]
  • Decapitating someone is an extremely messy thing to do. John Priveaux would have had to relocate the body before doing so, or had a very large cleanup job to do before leaving her room.

Historical Notes[]

  • Hortenza de' Medici is a fictional character.
